From a mediation standpoint, most of workplace conflict comes in the form of communication break-downs: from a lack of old-fashioned listening. Can you name at least one person in your life who really listens to you, as if what you are saying is important to them, as if they are hanging on your every word? Are you that person for someone else? Research indicates that most of us will answer "no" to both questions. Why is that, and what is lost if that kind of listening so rarely happens? Spend the morning working through the reasons why we don't listen and how to improve our listening; and spend the afternoon practicing constructive communication skills that will improve your ability to listen.
